Many had seen this coming from a while back. the acquisition of the app by tech giant Facebook was the first step. The introduction of voice calls to the app was the get ready call, and now we are finally here. The feature uses your data bundles and not your credit or does it carry a separate bill for postpaid customers. Get your self a WIFI connection and you basically have unlimited calls to anyone anywhere.
There is stiff competition for video handling capability with every platform trying to shake of the video giant Youtube for streaming & skype for calling of the scene. So all these small additions are small strides by each company trying to perfect their video capabilities. The common asumption is that video is going to take over and will formulate over 80 percent of online content in a couple of years, so everybody is trying to be at the top of their game.
Now if only our mobile providers here could get with the program, data charges are still significantly high in Kenya. Video links and or video streaming is still for the elite and affluent. You may have sent a video link to a friend and they have replied “ill watch it tomorrow in the office on WIFI” because that data bundle doesnt stretch for as long as it should.
We are currently buying a 1Gb data bundle at an average of Ksh500, there is a mobile company in India that is offering the same amount of data, infact at even faster speeds for as low as about Ksh70, Yes 70 bob will get you a GB of data. Check out the launch of that HERE. (warning its abit of a long video so scrub through if you must)
